10:32 am - Linux Workshop @ informatics FOSS Informatics: Up and away with Ubuntu Workshop “The time is not far when most of the people will take up the Open Source OS as their answer for their working.” This is exactly what I, and all of us felt at FOSS Informatics after seeing the overwhelming response for the Ubuntu Workshop that was scheduled to take place in 10 days time. To be honest, the time duration was provided so that most of the students would have enough registration time. Well! Talk about time that was not the issue with I.T fanatics of Informatics. ‘Coz, what turned out was least expected as the list for the workshop participants was over flown within 40 hours of the posted date. In fact, the list grew on and on to much of our delight. The event that was expected to have only few participants now had entries that could not be fitted into the time frame and schedule by any means. So, we had to split the students into groups, which meant that all the entries couldn’t be fitted into the single workshop. This was bit of a disappointment on our part as much as it was for the students who had registered much eagerly for the workshop. But as they say “When there is the will there is a way” we are already planning to organize the second workshop for the registered students in near future. The Event The workshop was intended on Ubuntu 8.10 (alias Intrepid Ibex) and purely for the newbies who had or hadn’t heard about Ubuntu. It was a two day program where for the first day the focus was to learn the basics of Ubuntu 8.10. The second day was focused for much awaited LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) program. It was much to our pleasure that LTSP was actually happening. ‘Coz we had to miss the earlier workshop on LTSP by FOSS-Nepal due to time scarcity. However, one of our friends was able to attend that workshop and he was willing to share his knowledge with us. That’s the beauty of this committee (FOSS) I feel; it says: ”Come, Share and Contribute”. After all, knowledge is not worth a penny until and unless you share it. Its all about expanding your horizon of knowledge. It’s Show Time 18th of January was the show day for the Ubuntu Workshop by FOSS-Informatics. Well the time was quick arriving and like it is with all other events; the time was scarce. The helping hand shown by our college should be applauded for in this case as well. All of us were busy with the preparations for the event. From the cozy corner of our college which I thought could only be the samosa spot was the place where few of our friends were busy giving the finishing touches minutes before the event. That’s the beauty of getting the experience as that. Actually all of us did the swell job. I ain’t sayin’ a thing Ya! We are not commenting on anything; frankly because we don’t need to. After having known about the facts of the Open Source OS in contrary to the others. The use of Open Source doesn’t make you feel that you are using some cheap program; it allows you to be imaginative and innovative. The list is endless. So, It is for the users’ to say how they feel with the Open Source and we won’t need to say a thing. Well! That was one experience from many others to come …. 12:10 pm - transparent proxy with Squid in 3 easy steps Server Configuration (Documented on Centos 4.04 OS)
* Step #1 : Squid configuration so that it will act as a transparent proxy * Step #2 : Iptables configuration o a) Configure system as router o b) Forward all http requests to 3128 (DNAT) * Step #3: Run scripts and start squid service
First, Squid server installed (use up2date squid) and configured by adding following directives to file: # vi /etc/squid/squid.conf
Modify or add following squid directives:
httpd_accel_host virtual httpd_accel_port 80 httpd_accel_with_proxy on httpd_accel_uses_host_header on acl lan src 192.168.1.1 192.168.2.0/24 http_access allow localhost http_access allow lan
Where,
* httpd_accel_host virtual: Squid as an httpd accelerator * httpd_accel_port 80: 80 is port you want to act as a proxy * httpd_accel_with_proxy on: Squid act as both a local httpd accelerator and as a proxy. * httpd_accel_uses_host_header on: Header is turned on which is the hostname from the URL. * acl lan src 192.168.1.1 192.168.2.0/24: Access control list, only allow LAN computers to use squid * http_access allow localhost: Squid access to LAN and localhost ACL only * http_access allow lan: — same as above –
Here is the complete listing of squid.conf for your reference (grep will remove all comments and sed will remove all empty lines) # grep -v "^#" /etc/squid/squid.conf | sed -e '/^$/d'
Output: hierarchy_stoplist cgi-bin ? acl QUERY urlpath_regex cgi-bin \? no_cache deny QUERY hosts_file /etc/hosts refresh_pattern ^ftp: 1440 20% 10080 refresh_pattern ^gopher: 1440 0% 1440 refresh_pattern . 0 20% 4320 acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 acl manager proto cache_object acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.255 acl to_localhost dst 127.0.0.0/8 acl purge method PURGE acl CONNECT method CONNECT cache_mem 1024 MB http_access allow manager localhost http_access deny manager http_access allow purge localhost http_access deny purge http_access deny !Safe_ports http_access deny CONNECT !SSL_ports acl lan src 192.168.1.1 192.168.2.0/24 http_access allow localhost http_access allow lan http_access deny all http_reply_access allow all icp_access allow all visible_hostname myclient.hostname.com httpd_accel_host virtual httpd_accel_port 80 httpd_accel_with_proxy on httpd_accel_uses_host_header on coredump_dir /var/spool/squid
Iptables configuration Next, I had added following rules to forward all http requests (coming to port 80) to the Squid server port 3128 : iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp –dport 80 -j DNAT –to 192.168.1.1:3128 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp –dport 80 -j REDIRECT –to-port 3128
Start or Restart the squid:
# /etc/init.d/squid restart # chkconfig squid on
Testing squid proxy is working correctly...
See access log file /var/log/squid/access.log: # tail -f /var/log/squid/access.log

11:36 pm - Gmail and HTTPS hey have you ever monitored the gmail page. Recently, I saw that gmail whole session is not encrypted. First i hit the gmail.com then enter the username and password. during this stage it is https but after login to mailbox page it is http only. that means whole session is not encrypted. what do you think?? but hitting https://mail.google.com remains https. I capture all the contain from gmail. I used wireshark and tcpdump to capture the gmail session. so if you don't want to MITM attack against your gmail session use https://mail.google.com. :)
Now we have a solution too. Here is some which i haved ripped from nepsecure having great discussion. 1. "well if u need security there is always https://mail.google.com which encrypts whole session, from login to logout as u've mentioned. But that aside, https isn't always flexible IMO, and its slow as well. Thats why i think http://mail.google.com is there. Depending upon how paranoid u are about ur security. :)" -----bibastha
2. "So folks, either https://mail.google.com OR pop3 over SSL should do for all your privacy need at least for Gmail & Yahoo! :-)" -------nepbabu
3. "use Greasemonkey script (GMailSecure) it forces gmail to use secure connection for all request by redirecting http://gmail.google.com/ to https://gmail.google.com/ though POP3 over TLS is best solution" ---------bipin
